South African George Coetzee confirmed that he will defend the Portugal Masters title in 2021 and several players who have won European Tour tournaments this season will also play the 15th edition of the most important Portuguese golf tournament, namely the Scottish Grant Forrest and Calum Hill, and the Danes Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard.
A year ago, in a pandemic context, under a strict sanitary bubble, in an event held behind closed doors, George Coetzee won his fifth European Tour title, but his first on Europe. Besides him, four other former champions of the competition will also act at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course: the Danish Lucas Bjerregaard (2017), the English Steven Brown (2019) and Andy Sullivan (2015) and the French Alex Levy (2014 ).
Although the definitive list of entries has not yet been announced, it is possible that Frenchman Victor Perez will be the main character before the tournament starts. The 61st place in the world ranking ended the previous season with a good 7th place in the DP World Tour Championship, in Dubai, and, in 2021, has been shining in the PGA Tour of North America: 4th in the WGC/Dell Technologies Match Play and 9th in The Players Championship. On the European Tour he was 4th at Saudi International.
The Hojgaard twins made history this year when they became the first brothers to win in consecutive weeks on the European Tour. Rasmus was the best at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, and then Nicolai won the DS Automobiles Italian Open.
Calum Hill has started what is predicted to be a trophy collection at the Cazoo Open in England. A week earlier, Grant Forrest had hailed himself as the first Scot of the past decade to triumph in Scotland at the Hero Open.
Englishman Sam Horsfield, who won two consecutive titles in the United Kingdom in 2020, will be another of the stars of the European Tour at the 15th Portugal Masters, from 4 to 7 November, at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course, in Vilamoura, with the Pro -Am on the 3rd. The €1.5 million prize money tournament was originally scheduled for April, but has been postponed due to travel and travel difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rory Colville, the new Championship Director of the Portugal Masters, rejoiced at the audience's return to the Algarve: «We are delighted to be able to welcome spectators again at this year's Portugal Masters. We would like to thank the General Directorate of Health and Dom Pedro Hotels and Golf Collection for their support, for their guidance in planning and organizing this fantastic event»
"It's a very popular tournament among players and spectators and we're looking forward to holding another memorable edition of the Portugal Masters," said Rory Colville, who will debut in 2021 leading the tournament that precedes the DP World Tour Championship, being the final qualifying round for the prestigious Dubai event, which closes the 2021 season of the European Tour.
Meanwhile, tickets for the Portugal Masters have already been put on sale, amounting to €20 per day for adults, €17 euros for those participating in subsidized programs, €8 for young people aged 12 to 17 and free for children under 12 years old.
