CG Vilamoura and national team player led from the first to the last round at the Montado and won with three strokes of advantage over the competition
Vítor Lopes wrote a glorious page for National Golf on Saturday to win the 88th Amador International Championship in Portugal at the Montado Hotel & Golf Resort in Palmela, a race organized by the Portuguese Golf Federation under the aegis of the EGA ( European Golf Association), and scoring for the amateur world ranking.
The player of the CG Vilamoura and the national team, 21 years old, led from the first to the last round to win with a total of 273 strokes (68-68-69-68), 15 under par, and three advantage over a trio composed by the Englishmen Benjamin Jones and Bailey Gill and the Danish Sebastian Fridriechsen.
It is the third victory of a Portuguese in the last 11 editions of the International of Portugal, after Pedro Figueiredo in 2008 in Estela Golf Club and Gonçalo Pinto (also of the CG Vilamoura) in 2013 in this same stage of the Montado.
Vítor Lopes is in great shape, having won last week, among professionals, at the Álamos Classic, Portugal Pro Golf Tour. The player thanked his coach, Joaquim Sequeira, and the Federation for "unconditional support" over the years, dedicating the triumph to his grandfather: "It has motivated me and was always there when I needed it."
The second best Portuguese in the race was Pedro Lencart, in the 13th, with 283 (71-71-70-71), 5 under par. Daniel da Costa Rodrigues, in his debut in the tournament with only 15 years, was one step down, in the 17th, with 284 (71-71-71-72). Francisco Matos Coelho, 14, also starred in a different competition, being 28th with 287 (71-70-75-71). And Afonso Girão was 32nd with 288 (72-68-70-78).
